Replica of Desolation of Smaug Map
Date
August 2023
Location
Oklahoma State University
Project type
Aging and Distressing
We created treasure maps for my Costume Crafts class.
I chose to do a replica of the Lonely Mountain Map from "the Hobbit".
I started by dying the fabric with peach to only make it look slightly darker. I then used tan on some parts to layer an aged look to the fabric. I then only dipped parts of the fabric briefly into cocoa brown dye to get the darker parts of the map to look really dirty.
I then drew out my map carefully with fabric marker once the fabric had dried. (I also used neon markers for the colored parts of the map so they will glow under black light.)
Once the map was drawn I took to distressing the fabric to create holes, tears, and fray the edges of the fabric. i touched up the drawing slightly before taking the last step of the process.
I wanted to create a burn look to one of the holes so i took black paint and water and layered only small bits of black paint to it and created a burn singed effect on the fabric around the hole.
I finished by staining the edges and the tears and holes to create a dirty, stained, and aged look to the map to complete the project.
